deep affinity for the sea

Kat & Ben's work represents their deep affinity for the sea and the joy they feel when in connection with nature. Individually they share their own unique visions of this connection.

Kat co-creates with the element of water using Suminagashi, an ancient Japanese marbling technique. With a paintbrush she drops non-toxic ink on the surface of water, pooling together color stories and creating abstract formations that remind her of her lifelong experiences on the oceanside.  She then captures the floating print by lying rice paper onto the ink.

Ben uses his camera to study the ocean from both on land and in the water.

Using his senses as a photographer and a surfer he observes the way, light, color, and elements of life integrate with the dynamic energy of the coast.  For this show, Ben has printed his images with water-based ink onto Baltic Birch wood panels, which are farmed to prevent deforestation.

Together they have infused both of their visions to create "Ocean Auras". Their vibrant imagery pays homage to this natural sanctuary for them. Ben prints these images on archival photo paper and then Kat hand marbles each piece creating one-of-a-kind collaborative works.

In honor of this place that has brought so much joy and healing to them and in keeping the beauty alive for future generations, Kat and Ben want to use this opportunity by donating a percentage of sales to The Surfrider Foundation - which is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the worlds oceans, waves, and beaches for all people through a powerful activist network.
